About The ComedySportz 2012 World Championships

The ComedySportz brand of improv comedy that IS a sport began 28 years ago in Milwaukee. 25 years ago, it expanded to Chicago and today ComedySportz is played in 21 cities across the U.S. and in Europe. The clubs, who are all members of the World Comedy League, gather each summer to compete for the title of World Comedy Champion.  More than 150 improv comedians are expected to come to Chicago this July to compete in eight matches over four days – from Wednesday, July 18 through Saturday, July 21, 2012.

A special venue for this special event

The World Championship will attract fanz from all over the Globe. To be sure we’ll have room for everyone to see their favorite teams, the championship matches will be played in a 984-seat venue, the Athenaeum Theatre. The Athenaeum is conveniently located at the corner of Lincoln, Southport and Wellington Avenues, just one mile from The ComedySportz Theatre. Parking is available at the Athenaeum.

For Loyal Fanz and new fans alike

For our long-time Loyal Fanz, this is a great opportunity to watch your favorite Chicago players take on improv superstars from around the country. For those new to ComedySportz, there’s no better way to have your first taste of America’s fastest, funniest show!

New to ComedySportz?

ComedySportz is fast-paced, family-friendly improvisational comedy, played as a sport. Two teams take turns making up scenes, playing games and singing songs – and the audience votes on which team they like the best. A referee keeps things moving and calls the ComedySportz fouls and takes suggestions shouted out by the audience before each game.

If you’ve seen TV’s Whose Line Is It Anyway? you’ve got the basic idea, although ComedySportz’s two-team competitive format ensures a fast-paced, high-energy show – and experiencing this live performance is very different from watching a TV show.
